A HEALTHY AND HEALTHFUL MONTEBELLO

The Internet has much advice to make our environment healthy and healthful, in order to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change.  It is noted that a healthy and healthful environment helps make Montebello a sustainable community.  (We do not have a sustainable lifestyle presently.)

From Montebello Today, summer, 2009:

In line with the Governor's statewide plan for California to achieve a 20 percent reduction in per-capita water use statewide by 2020, Montebello worked with Central Basin Municipal Water District to develop and adopt a mandatory water conservation ordinance at the July 22, 2009, City Council meeting.

This water conservation ordinance mandates reasonable water-use restrictions to achieve water demand reduction during the drought, and will help ensure future water supply sustainability.  The following is a summary of a few of the restrictions outlined in the ordinance:

Watering Hours.  Only water your lawn before 10:00 a.m. or after sunset.

Watering Duration.  If you have a sprinkler system, using your sprinklers to water your lawn is limited to 15 minutes per day.

Water Flow or Runoff.  Watering your lawn in a manner that causes excessive water flow or runoff is prohibited.  Leaving water running is prohibited.

Washing Hard or Paved Surfaces.  Washing hard or paved surfaces is prohibited except when necessary to alleviate safety or sanitary hazards, and then only by use of a hand-held hose equipped with a self-closing water shut-off device.

Obligation to Fix Leaks, Breaks or Malfunctions.  All leaks, breaks or malfunctions in plumbing or distribution systems shall be fixed within seven (7) days of discovery.

Washing Vehicles.  A hand-held hose equipped with a positive self-closing water shut-off nozzle or device is required when washing vehicles.
