... I learned to look more upon the bright side of my condition [Robinson Crusoe stranded alone on an
island], and less upon the dark side, and to consider what I enjoyed, rather than what I wanted: and this gave me sometimes such secret comforts, that I cannot express them; and which I take notice of here, to put those discontented people in mind of it, who cannot enjoy comfortably what God has given them, because they see and covet something that he has not given them. All our discontents about what we want appeared to me to spring from the want of thankfulness for what we have. ...

From a Montebello resident, March 4, 2014. Since we live at the very top of [a street in the La Merced area], we have dealt with coyotes for nearly 50 years. What I have noticed over the years is the lack of small animals for them to eat. We used to see lots of rabbits, snakes and mice. Now these small animals have disappeared and I believe the coyotes are in search of food. The coyotes have dug a hole under the fence by our house and that is their escape route. I have heard from other people that the coyotes have attacked dogs and cats all the way down as far as Whittier Blvd. The owners of the hill need to do something about this like planting cactus along the fence or place sandbags like they did in one spot. I hear the coyotes howling every now and then and it sounds like a very large pack. People need to keep their small animals indoors and be careful when small children are playing outside. I don't think they would ever attack an adult but caution is the word of the day.

Cardiovascular disease steadfastly remains the number-one killer of men and women in the US. It now accounts for over 50 percent of all deaths. But over 100 years ago, cardiovascular disease was responsible for only 15 percent of deaths. One of the reasons for this dramatic increase in cardiovascular disease has to do with our diet—specifically the kind of fat we eat. ...
